  • MPEG-4 audio (*.m4a)

  • QuickTime Movie (*.mov)

When you try to insert one of these formats, you receive the following error message:

'PowerPoint cannot insert a video from the selected file. Verify that the necessary 64-bit codec for this media format is installed, and then try again.'

Cause

This issue occurs because currently the Windows operating system does not have a 64-bit video or audio codec for the three QuickTime media formats.

Workaround

To work around this issue, you can convert these video or audio files to the Windows Media Video file format (*.wmv) by using a third-party video or audio file converter.

Cause: QuickTime movies don't play in some versions of Office for Windows

Solution: Add the QuickTime Player to the Windows-based computer

The 32-bit version of PowerPoint 2010 can only play an .mp4 or .mov file if the computer has a QuickTime Player installed. Download QuickTime for Windows from the Apple site.

Solution: Use a common movie format

If you want to insert a movie in an Office for Mac file, such as document, worksheet, or presentation, or attach a movie to an email message and then play the movie in Office for Windows, use a common movie format, such as MPEG 2, MPEG 4, or AVI.
